Description of Movie:
The movie opens with a nightmare. George Falconer is haunted by the death of his partner which occured eight months ago.  He decides that November 30th, 1962 will be a different day. The day he kills himself. Documenting the final 24 hours of Falconer's life, it's a charming and dark story of the people he meets, the memories he cherishes and the decisions he makes.

Review: Tom Ford's directorial debut has astonished me. Better known for being a fashion designer, Ford financed the film with his own money. The film is based on a book by Christopher Isherwood, which I have not read but intend on doing so. It's not the plot that makes the film effective. Ford's genius in lighting and colour are what make this film so unique. When George is sad, lonely, depressed, the entire film takes on a low saturation. Almost grey scale as he trudges about in his home, at work, talking to the neighbors. When he encounters something beautiful or familiar or kind, the entire screen explodes in brilliant colour. Red cheeks, bright eyes, the saturation is hiked up to the point of boiling. It's a gentle transition, barely noticable at first. Ford's grasp of angles and shots should also be praised. Everyone in the film is simply beautiful. From Colin Firth to model Jon Kortajarena, to Julianne Moore, just breathtaking beauties and we are blessed with wonderful close up shots that create such an intimate environment and capture the mood of the time period. The end of the film leaves you with such a feeling in the pit of your stomach, as the music swells and the denoument unravels, the viewer is left breathless. How Colin Firth never won the Oscar for this film I will never know.
